Tropical Cyclone Statement issued June 18 at 10:09AM CDT by NWS Brownsville TXHLSBROThis product covers The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas***TROPICAL STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT***NEW INFORMATION---------------* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:- None* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:- A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Cameron Island,Coastal Cameron, Coastal Kenedy, Coastal Willacy, KenedyIsland, and Willacy Island* STORM INFORMATION:- About 410 miles southeast of Brownsville TX or about 440 milessoutheast of Port Mansfield TX- 21.8N 92.7W- Storm Intensity 40 mph- Movement North or 5 degrees at 7 mphSITUATION OVERVIEW------------------At 10 AM CDT, a large area of low pressure across the Bay of Campecheis moving north at 6 mph, and expected turn toward the west-northwestlater today or tonight. This system is expected to continue to slowlystrengthen and approach the central Mexico Gulf coast late tomorrow asa Tropical Storm. Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for coastalwaters and island to coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy and Cameroncounties for Potential Tropical Cyclone One.The main hazard across the lower Texas coast into Deep South Texasremains flooding rainfall of generally 4-8 inches, with localizedrainfall amounts up to 10 or more inches, especially towards thecoast. Beach and marine conditions will become dangerous as well, withcoastal flooding of up to 3 feet possible, deadly rip currents, highsurf, gusty winds, and low visibility in heavy rainfall. The strongestwinds of this tropical system may reside well north of any circulationand extend further. Tropical wind gusts up to 45 mph are likelyoffshore and potentially into coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy, andCameron counties. Higher winds gusts are also possible inland withbands of showers and thunderstorms.POTENTIAL IMPACTS-----------------* FLOODING RAIN:Protect against life-threatening rainfall flooding having possibleextensive impacts across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas.Potential impacts include:- Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues.- Small streams, creeks, canals, arroyos, and ditches may becomedangerous rivers. Flood control systems and barriers may becomestressed.- Flood waters can enter many structures within multiplecommunities, some structures becoming uninhabitable or washedaway. Many places where flood waters may cover escape routes.Streets and parking lots become filled with several feet ofwater with underpasses submerged. Driving conditions becomedangerous. Many road and bridge closures with some weakened orwashed out.Protect against dangerous rainfall flooding having possiblesignificant impacts across Deep South Texas.* WIND:Protect against hazardous wind having possible limited impacts acrossacross the lower Texas coast and coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy,and Cameron counties. Potential impacts in this area include:- Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchoredmobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about.- Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped oruprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees areshallow rooted. Some fences and roadway signs blown over.- A few roads impassable from debris, particularly within urbanor heavily wooded places. Hazardous driving conditions onbridges and other elevated roadways.- Scattered power and communications outages.Elsewhere across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas, littleto no impact is anticipated.* SURGE:Protect against locally hazardous surge having possible limitedimpacts across across the lower Texas coast. Potential impacts inthis area include:- Localized inundation with storm surge flooding mainly alongimmediate shorelines and in low-lying spots, or in areasfarther inland near where higher surge waters move ashore.- Sections of near-shore roads and exposed parking lots couldbecome covered with some surge water. Driving conditionsdangerous in places where surge water covers the road.- Moderate beach erosion. Heavy surf also breaching dunes, mainlyin usually vulnerable locations. Strong rip currents.- Minor damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers. A fewsmall craft broken away from moorings.Elsewhere across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas, littleto no impact is anticipated.* TORNADOES:Protect against a tornado event having possible limited impactsacross The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas. Potential impactsinclude:- The occurrence of isolated tornadoes can hinder the executionof emergency plans during tropical events.- A few places may experience tornado damage, along with powerand communications disruptions.- Locations could realize roofs peeled off buildings, chimneystoppled, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned,large tree tops and branches snapped off, shallow-rooted treesknocked over, moving vehicles blown off roads, and small boatspulled from moorings.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS----------------------------------* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:Now is the time to complete all preparations to protect life andproperty in accordance with your emergency plan. Heedevacuation orders issued by the local authorities.Rapidly rising flood waters are deadly. If you are in a flood-pronearea, consider moving to higher ground. Never drive through a floodedroadway. Remember, turn around don't drown!If a Tornado Warning is issued for your area, be ready to shelterquickly, preferably away from windows and in an interior room notprone to flooding.
