Tropical Cyclone Statement issued June 17 at 4:14PM CDT by NWS Houston/Galveston TX HLSHGX This product covers Southeast Texas **TROPICAL STORM ARTHUR WILL CONTINUE TO BRING GUSTY WINDS ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST** NEW INFORMATION --------------- * CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - None * CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Bolivar Peninsula, Brazoria Islands, Chambers, Coastal Brazoria, Coastal Galveston, and Galveston Island * STORM INFORMATION: - About 80 miles west-southwest of Galveston TX - 28.9N 96.1W - Storm Intensity 45 mph - Movement North-northeast or 15 degrees at 7 mph SITUATION OVERVIEW ------------------ Tropical Storm Arthur made landfall near Matagorda County earlier this afternoon. Winds may continue to gust up to 40 mph along the immediate coast through the early evening, before conditions begin to improve. Rainfall has really diminished on the east side of TS Arthur, and the flooding rain threat has been removed. Otherwise, TS Arthur will move northeastward into southwest Louisiana tonight. POTENTIAL IMPACTS ----------------- * WIND: Protect against hazardous wind having possible limited impacts across the immediate southeast Texas coast. Potential impacts in this area include: - Unsecured lightweight objects blown about. - Some large tree limbs broken off. - Some fences and roadway signs blown over. - Scattered power and communications outages. Elsewhere across Southeast Texas, little to no impact is anticipated. * SURGE: Coastal flood warnings and advisories have been issued for the immediate coast. Please reference the Coastal Hazard Message for more information. Potential impacts in this area include: - Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure could be inundated. Some shoreline erosion will occur. Elsewhere across Southeast Texas, little to no impact is anticipated. Heat Advisory issued June 17 at 12:29PM CDT until June 19 at 10:00PM CDT by NWS Houston/Galveston TX * WHAT...Heat index values of 107 to 114 degrees Fahrenheit (41 to 45 degrees Celsius) expected during the late morning to early evening hours on Thursday and Friday. * WHERE...Portions of south central and southeast Texas. * WHEN...From 11 AM Thursday to 10 PM CDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
